Welcome to the Section of Social Medicine!
space

Located within the Division of General Internal
Medicine at Stroger Hospital of Cook County, section members work in coordination with the Cook County Bureau of Health Services to establish partnerships with community residents, health professionals, and other individuals and organizations to reduce health disparities, promote social justice, and advocate for public policy change.

There are many definitions of social medicine.  We t
hink section member Marge Cohen summed it up best when she said,

"Social medicine is an attempt to address the political, social, and economic issues that impact health care and health care delivery, more specifically, racial, class, and gender inequities. Social medicine provides potential resources for innovative, community-oriented projects and research on these issues."

Our Mission
The Section of Social Medicine is dedicated to improving the health status of underserved populations through health service programs, community initiatives, research, and education addressing the social determinants of health.

We invite you to explore this website and learn about our members, the wonderful projects on which they are working, and other valuable resources.  Please feel free to attend our meetings on the 3rd Monday of each month at 9:30 am at Stroger Hospital.
