Denice Zeck from the
American Forum in
Washington, DC, will facilitate this workshop, during which
participants will learn to develop a "key message," focus on a
specific audience, and craft an op-ed piece that moves people to
action. The American Forum is a non-profit organization that
helps progressive individuals get their messages into the media.
They have assisted in the publication of over 1000 advocacy
related print media articles in prominent newspapers and
publications. The training will include practice writing and
peer feedback. Please come prepared to write about a topic about
which you feel passionate. Participants will also learn about
writing letters to the editor and accessing radio to promote
your message. This training is the first in a series of
advocacy training sessions sponsored by the Section of Social
Medicine. During the coming year, we plan to offer additional
workshops on topics such as building relationships with
journalists, developing media interview skills, utilizing the
Internet, and collaborating with community organizations. Please
contact David Buchanan or Lisa Stevak if you would like to
participate in planning these future advocacy skill-building
workshops.
